Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds. It is commonly seen in tongue twisters, such as Bouncing baby buggy bumpers. Note the repetition of the b sound.
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds. The repeated sounds can lend a mood to a written piece, such as The ghost moans and groans. When a ghost is moaning, it makes a long o sound.
Remember it is a sound, not a letter, that is repeated. Phantom fish phone philosophers on Fridays has 6 f sounds, but the the letter f appears only twice.
Your assignment is to write one sentence that contains alliteration and to write a second sentence that contains assonance. Identify the sound you are repeating at the end of each sentence. My examples should get you started:
Gluttonous goats gulp gallons of Gatorade. (g)
The eagle screams as freedom rings. (long e)
Be sure you post your work on the class page and not the home page. Assignment is due on Tuesday, February 5.
