Your first assignment is to write a Masterpiece Sentence. You begin with a simple sentence and add to it until you end up with a complex sentence. Here's an example:

The Nile flows.

The Nile flows in Egypt.

The Nile flows in Egypt all year long.

The Nile flows quickly in Egypt all year long.

In Egypt, the Nile flows quickly, all year long.

In Egypt, the powerful Nile River flows swiftly, throughout the year.

by Mr. Lindsey, teacher

Line 1. Start with a simple sentence (article + noun + verb).

Line 2. Add where (prepostional phrase).

Line 3. Add when (prepositional phrase).

Line 4. Add how (adverb).

Line 5. Rearrange and experiment to find the best-sounding sentence.

Line 6. Add what (adjectives).

Line 6. (again) Change specific words to carry more meaning.

All lines- Edit for puncuation/capitalization/spelling/grammar.

I will start everyone off with a Masterpiece Sentence of my own:

The fish swims.

The fish swims in the ocean.

The fish swims in the ocean durning red tide.

The fish swims slowly in the ocean during red tide.

During red tide, the fish swims slowly in the ocean.

During red tide, the bloodthirsty shark swims menancingly in the lagoon.
