Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds, like this: Jackrabbits jump joyously for jelly beans. The sound being repeated is, of course, /j/.
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds, like this: Eels creep in the deep green sea. The sound being repeated is /ee/, found in eels, creep, deep, green, and sea.
Remember, in both cases a sound is repeated, not a letter. Philosophical fish fry fritters on Fridays repeats the /f/ sound, found twice in the blend "ph" and 4 times with the letter "f".
Sometimes both alliteration and asssonance can be found in a passage, such as The baboon balanced bananas on the bamboo branch. The alliteration here is the /b/ sound and the assonance is the /a/ in baboon, balanced, bamboo, branch.
Your assignemnt is to write 2 sentences: the first with alliteration and the second with assonance. The sound in your passages should be repeated a minimum of 4 times. We will share our sentences in class on Thursday 3/11.
