robin skylark wren
To prepare for Shakespearean sonnets, we will write couplets, which are 2 lines of verse that rhyme (couplet = couple of lines). Read this 6-line poem comprised of 3 couplets:
Three Things to Remember
by William Blake
A Robin Redbreast in a cage,
puts all of Heaven in a rage.
A skylark wounded on the wing,
doth make a cherub cease to sing.
He who shall hurt the little wren,
shall never be beloved by men.
The tone of the poem is a gentle warning; Blake is advising us to cherish small creatures or else we shall suffer the Wrath of Man and Heaven.
Your assignment is to write a 4-line poem of 2 couplets. It can be about any 1 subject, but the title is Two Things to Remember. The objective is to emulate Blake and give sage advice about your chosen topic. Your poem does not have to have a religious theme. We will read our poems in class on Friday, April 29.
