Welcome To Wiki!

In the Hawaiian language, "wiki" means quick. This is a quick, interactive site for English 9 students where they can view daily assignments including vocabulary, upload documents, and post written work. Always keep in mind that this public domain is an educational resource; therefore, students must not write anything they do not want their principal, guardians, and clergyman/woman to read. Inappropriate content will generate unpleasant consequences.

Please review our rules for using this site:

  • We will post quality work that is academically relevant.
  • We will respect the work of others.
  • We will post wiki assignments on the wiki and in no other form.

In this wiki assignment you will show mastery of apostrophe by writing an ode to an everyday object. The object should be something you have great appreciation for. Write the poem in second person (you, your) as though the object can understand you. Your Cornell notes will help you write an expressive poem.

There is an added component to this assignment in that instead of reading our poems out loud, we will have a non-human object, or avatar, orate our words for us. To create your avatar, go to www.voki.com. You will need to create an account with an email address and password. Follow the steps to create your avatar; you can select a voice or record your own voice after typing in your ode. Here is my avatar reciting my ode:

Pencil, oh pencil,

How wonderful you are!

Always ready with a point,

filling in every blank,

waiting to dot every "i".

Divulging my most inner thoughts

But only when I command thee.

And yet,

you are the first

to hide my mistakes,

softly erasing evidence of my folly

with your rubbery end,

peppering my paper with

pink confetti.

Dear pencil, scribe with me!

Together we can doodle

into eternity.

Your avatar does not have to look or sound like you. You can be creative with appearance, costumes, accents, backgrounds... but do remember the purpose of the assignment is using apostrophe in an ode, not making an avatar.

To install your avatar after publishing, copy its code (there is a handy COPY button) from the voki web site. Log on to wiki and go to class page. Place the curser above or below your ode, click on "Insert" from the top bar. Scroll down to "More Plugins", scroll down new menu to "Interactive Media", then select "Voki Speaking Avatar". Paste the code in the box. You will see a small green Voki avatar box; the voki itself will not appear on wiki until you "Save". I cannot stress enough that you must not procrastinate on this assignment as you must allow yourself time to solve possible technical problems. Also, respect your classmates by writing a rough draft of your poem before you post to wiki. Add your work at the bottom of the class page so you do not tamper with the other odes and avatars. Finally, remember that this is the only forum in which you can submit your poem, so be sure your ode is posted and saved before you log out. Our avatars will read the odes in class this Friday, 1/11.
